Kijiji co-founder sees rapid growth in country's tech sector

As one of the general partners of Real Ventures, the largest and most active venture capital funds in Canada that target early stage startups, Janet Bannister is bullish on the tech scene in Canada.

Bannister, one of the founders of Kijiji, was in Winnipeg on Wednesday speaking at the Innovators, the annual gala dinner put on by the Information and Communications Technology Association of Manitoba.

Real Ventures’ three funds have raised a total of $150 million, with about 90 per cent of that to be invested in Canadian companies — about 120 to date.

Automation testing shouldn’t be viewed as a one-size-fits-all solution for quality assurance when it comes to your company’s software. Rather, information technology pros need to take a more tailored approach, deploying both manual and automated testing as best suits their specific project.

That was the assessment from the panel of quality-assurance (QA) professionals who spoke to a lunchtime crowd at the Tech Mash Up hosted by the Information and Communication Technologies Association of Manitoba (ICTAM) on March 21 at the NRC building in downtown Winnipeg. The panel featured QA professional advice and expertise, including Winnipeg-based IT and business consultancy Online Business Systems, which has been in business for 30 years with clients across North America.

Both the public and the information and communications technologies sectors need to be more vigilant than ever in protecting their data from hackers and the over-reach of state security organizations, said the lead counsel for National Security Agency whistleblower Edward Snowden.

Ben Wizner, director of the Speech, Privacy and Technology Project for the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), spoke February 9 at The State of Security event hosted by the Information and Communication Technologies Association of Manitoba (ICTAM) at the RBC Convention Centre Winnipeg. Snowden’s lawyer since July 2013, Wizner focused his talk on data and communications security — what it means both to the general public and to state-run surveillance organizations at a time when many nations are expressing more authoritarian tendencies.

08/22/16 - Local organization helping Manitoba companies transform IT departments (via MTS Business Hub)

The Information and Communication Technologies Association of Manitoba (ICTAM) is now the only Manitoba organization to be a member in a cross-Canada network of digital media innovation hubs.

“We are thrilled to join the Canadian Digital Media Network (CDMN),” said Kathy Knight, CEO of ICTAM. “Tech is everywhere and in everything, (so) being recognized as a hub gives us the opportunity to continue making an impact in Manitoba.”

“Being a hub will enable us to further elevate the profile of Manitoba’s burgeoning tech sector on the national stage.”
